Tony Ward

B. Comm. FCA

Strategy, Operations and Finance Consultant

Tony is from Monaghan and qualified as a Chartered Accountant in 1989. He is married to Eleanor and has two children, Ronan and Rachel.

Tony has worked in a variety of roles in practice, consultancy and in finance and fundraising in the charity sector. From 2016 to 2022 he was Director of Finance with The Wheel, the national umbrella body for charities and nonprofits in Ireland. He is currently an Independent Consultant providing finance, governance, leadership and mentoring services to a range of organisations in the private, public and charity sectors. Key highlights of his career include:

  • Assisting to grow The Wheel from an income of €1.5m to almost €3m from 2016 to 2022, while employee numbers also doubled. During this time he implemented a new risk management policy, governance and compliance procedures and a HR strategy for the organization;

  • Acting as Interim CEO to a number of organisations from 2022 to present as they went through periods of change;

  • Positions on a number of boards in the charity sector, including in the recent past the National Advocacy Service for People with Disabilities, Sightsavers and The Charities Regulator. Tony was also chair of Chartered Accountants Ireland charity and nonprofit group from 2017 to 2023 and is currently chair of Irish Rail Disability User Group.

In his personal life Tony had to come to terms with a significant disability at an early stage in his career, being diagnosed with a degenerative eye condition in his late 20s. This has been an ever-present challenge for him over the years in daily life but also in advancing through his career. One of the developments that he reflects upon as having been really important is the development of adaptive technology which has made so many things possible from an accessibility perspective.

Tony is also a keen runner and represented Ireland at 2 World and 4 European championships in 800m and 1,500m in the early 00s. Nowadays he contents himself with running marathons, having completed Dublin in 2024 and, at time of writing, looking forward to Boston 2025 which will be his 8th.
